AdminHistory James Atkinson was a political associate of members of the Brougham family, Henry, 1st Baron Brougham and Vaux (1778-1868), James (1780-1833) and William, 2nd Baron Brougham and Vaux (1795-1886), all of whom served as MPs at various times, and he was the agent for the Whig interest in Westmorland and Cumberland, where the Brougham family had its estates. Henry Brougham's attempt to be elected to Parliament for Westmorland, standing against the Lowther ascendancy in the county, was unsuccessful in 1818 and again in 1820 and 1826. Atkinson was involved in these campaigns.

Correspondence and papers of James Atkinson, largely comprising c500 letters, 1817-1835 and undated, received from c135 correspondents, with particular accumulations from James Brougham (101 letters, 1818-1833), William Brougham, 2nd Baron Brougham and Vaux (14 letters, [1818]-1831), John Crosby (70 letters, 1817-1826), George Hall, an attorney from Appleby (12 letters, 1818-1833), Richard Lough (13 letters, 1817-1819), John Thomson (51 letters, 1818-1831), Joseph Wilkinson (21 letters, 1826, 1832), relating mainly to Westmorland elections; related papers on Westmorland (14 items, 1817-1820); and a few letters and papers created by Atkinson, 1818-1830, relating largely to Westmorland elections.
