DescriptionChristian Schiller kept detailed notebooks mainly containing notes for lectures or articles, ranging from initial drafts of scripts to the final versions. They also contain additional material, such as working notes and rough ideas. Sometimes inserts can be located within the notebooks which may be mathematical notes, markers, newspaper cuttings or typed notes etc. The series is incomplete as some of Schiller's notebooks were lost during Schiller's own lifetime [on a train].
Extent40 volumes
ArrangementThe notebooks have been arranged chronologically, as far as possible, using the earliest date that appears in each notebook. Since their creation it appears differing numbering systems have been used on the notebooks, most prominent being the system using red labels. However it is not clear what these systems were intended to reflect and it was felt that a simple chronological arrangement would be more logical to those wishing to use the material. In terms of the time periods these notebooks cover there is frequent overlapping. Two volumes have been removed from this series: 'The Hereford Course' (Ref: DC/CS/A/8) and 'King's Treasuries Poetry' (Ref: DC/CS/A/3). The first as it is not Schiller's work and the second because it is purely a volume of copied poetry commenced when Schiller was at School and not related to his professional career.
