Description | 10 letters written by Fred Clarke to his wife Edith while she was back in Oxford. During this period Clarke was in Montreal in June, before travelling with his daughter Betty to Halifax, Nova Scotia, in July 1932 to teach classes there again, and give public lectures. In these letters he occasionally touches on politics back in Britain and throughout the British Empire, for example in the letter of July 11th where he expresses his strong approval of Prime Minister Macdonald, and remarks: 'how fine to see England shaping the world again.' Elsewhere he comments on the British Empire Economic Conference (held in Ottawa at this time), his admiration of the British Empire, and how the conference should be used to steer the Empire to integrate with the rest of the world (letter dated 23 July 1932). Fred and Betty leave Halifax to return to Montreal in mid-August.
The folder also contains one letter sent to Edith while she was on the boat over to Montreal, written 23 Sept 1932. |
