Description | Press cuttings from The Times relating to a letter to the Editor from George Darwin. Darwin's letter, published 6 January 1909, was in response to an article on the Metropolitan Police which had appeared on January 4th. He claimed the article wrongly attributed the system of identification by finger prints to Sir Edward Henry, overlooking Galton's contribution. Darwin's assertions prompted a number of letters contesting the issue. This item contains two cuttings of Darwin's letter, seven cuttings of letters in response (some duplicates) and notes by Galton on the controversy (7 folios). Also contains one cutting of a letter from Francis Galton to the Editor of The Times, dated 13 January 1909. |
