AdminHistory | Bath High School was opened on 21 September 1875, headed by Susan Woods in leased premises at 5 Portland Place. The kindergarten opened in 1878. In 1892 the school leased 6 Portland Place and added the building at 4 in 1906. By 1920s the old premises became too crowded and the school moved to Rock House (renamed Hope House) in 1926. In 1932 Beechen Cliff House preparatory school was taken over by the school and a new gymnasium was built in the grounds of 'Hope House'. In 1936 a cottage on the grounds of 'Hope House' was converted into a junior school. On 24 April 1942 the 'Hope House' received a direct hit in an air raid and the senior school found temporary accommodation in 1-2 Lansdown Crescent. In 1943 the school purchased 12 Lansdown Crescent, and purchased 12 Lansdown Crescent Mews in 1946 and 4 Lansdown Crescent in 1947. In 1956 Beechen Cliff House was renamed Linsley House. The school returned to Hope House in 1951. In the 1970s Linsley House was closed and amalgamated with the Junior School into 1-2 Lansdown Crescent. In 1993 the Junior School moved to Grosvenor Place and the Sixth Form was centred at 1 Lansdown Crescent. In 1998 the school merged with the Royal School, Bath, to form the Royal High School, Bath. The junior school remained at Hope House; the senior school moved to the premises of the Royal School; and the Winfield centre for sixth form students. |
