| AdminHistory | Brighton High School was opened on 20th June 1876 in Milton House on Montpelier Road. It was the 10th school opened by the Girls' Public Day School Company and initially had 17 pupils under head mistress Edith Creak. Moved to 'The Temple', Montpelier Road, 1879; new wing added and assembly room enlarged, 1891; 8 Norfolk Terrace rented for the junior school, 1904; original dome was demolished and a new gymnasium was opened, 1911-1912; changed name to Brighton and Hove High School, 1912; junior school moved into The Old Vicarage, 67 Montpelier Road, 1923; new science block built, 1961; new hall/gym added, 1977; classroom block added, 1980; adjoining building purchase to extend the school, 1990.
The school offered training for kindergarten teachers from an early date until the end of World War Two. By 1916 the school offered lessons in domestic science for older pupils but ended in the 1920s. In 1935 the Domestic Science lessons were resumed in the former boarding house at 22 Denmark Terrace. The course prepared girls for the Housecraft diploma of the National Council of Domestic Studies but was no longer taught by 1939. |
