TitleLetter from Jean François De Luc, in Amsterdam to his father Jean André De Luc
Date18 Jun 1781
DescriptionExplaining that the letter Jean André had received from Mr Vernède was troubling him greatly. Jean François points out that the business had decreased substantially since he had first started mainly due to the war and that they now had hardly any trade with France, Spain and Britain, as well as their colonies. Furthermore, Mr Vernède had started travelling shortly after Jean François' arrival so most of his training had been done by correspondence. Being only in contact by letter had become problematic and had resulted in various misunderstandings. Jean François would like his father's opinion and support and had therefore sent him a draft of a letter for Mr Vernède for his approval. In it he assured his employer that he had not considered the work asked of him below his position.
