Description | Kept by J H Ott, senior, between the ages of 18 and 24, in Latin, as a record of his journeys and studies in Switzerland, Germany, Holland, England (London, Gravesend, Oxford, Rochester, Rye, etc.), usually in company of his school friend J H Hottinger, later also an important figure of the Swiss Calvinist Church. Prefixed is a brief account of the writer's parentage and early life (2 pages). The marginal notes in German are stated to be by Rev George Cecil Renouard, Professor of Arabic at Cambridge 1815-1821. Documents and printed papers interleaved are: certificate of theological studies to J H Ott, father of the diarist, from the Academy of Steinfort, Westphalia, 1610; and certificates to the diarist, from various academies and universities; prayers in black letter print, in Dutch. |
