| Description | Register of the 'actes' of the vestry of the congregation meeting in the Chapel in York Street, St. James's Square, 22 December 1689-9 April 1694, and in Swallow Street, Piccadilly, 1 July 1694-6 September 1696. The paste-on cover title of this manuscript is not contemporary and is misleading. It reads: 'Acte et reglement de l'eglise en Jewin Street proche Aldersgate 1686 jusqua 1696 St. James's Square, removed to Swallow St.'. The manuscript is in two parts with separate paginations: i-iii from front cover, 1-46 from back cover. Pages 47 and 112 are missing. Inside each cover is pasted an abstract of the manuscript. Inside the front cover is, in addition, an uncompleted index. |
| AdminHistory | This church was an off-shoot of the Jewin Street Church and the story of its establishment in 1689 is told in this manuscript. On 1 September 1690, a pastoral union was formed between Jewin Street, St James's Square, Le Quarré, and Hungerford Market. On 26 January 1691, this union became an absolute one for all church matters. The St James's Square congregation moved to a new church in Swallow Street, Piccaddilly, in July 1694. On 23 November 1707, the consistory was united with that of Le Quarré. In 1710 the church was closed. The registers, with historical introductory notes, have been printed in William and Susan Minet, eds., 'Registres des eglises de la Chappelle Royale de Saint James 1700-1756 et de Swallow Street 1690-1709', Huguenot Society Quarto Series, vol. XXVIII (London, 1924). A history of the Swallow Street Church is given in William and Susan Minet, eds., 'Register of the Church of St Martin Orgars with its history and that of the Swallow Street Church', Huguenot Society Quarto Series, vol. XXXVII (London, 1935). |
