TitleMerchant's accounts
Date1714-1719
DescriptionThe volume comprises:

i) ff 1-10: November 1714 to March 1715. Fair copy accounts, in French, of a London general merchant dealing in a wide range of commodities including metal goods and textiles. His dealings abroad are mainly in Rouen, Amsterdam and Lisbon. There are several references to 'Jean Allary, mon garon'. On f 1 there is an inventory of the merchant's goods, capital, and debts, but his name does not appear.

ii) pp 1-17: July to December 1718. Fair copy account, in English, in another hand, of general merchandise. The trade is much wider, embracing Smyrna and West Africa as well as European ports. At the end a note reads: 'Finis le premiere (sic) livre du Journal'.

iii) pp 1-15: December 1718 to June 1719. Similar to (b).

iv) pp 1-10: December 1718 to March 1719. Similar to (b).

v) pp 1-7: July to August. The year is omitted. Similar to (b).

The merchant concerned in section (b) and (e) may be Charles Snell whose name occurs several times in sections (d) and (e). In some of the ventures he seems to have been in partnership with Richard Nicoll, and in other with John Young and Thomas Laxton as well as Nicoll.
