TitleSubscriptions
Date1752-1783
DescriptionThis is the oldest surviving record of the School. The title on the cover 'List of Subscribers 1752-1783' evidently dates from a rebinding. Names of subscribers are entered on the left of each page, with columns for subscriptions, mostly annual. In 1752 there were 114 subscribers; in the early 1760s the number had risen to about 170 but it had declined to below 120 by 1783.
Bound in are:
i) Between 1759 and 1760, a list of subscriptions collected and not collected by the fraudolent Master, Mr Longfellow, in 1791, including one he collected nine days after he had absconded
ii) At 1768, a list of 'masters and mistresses for boys and girls', 1759-1760, i.e. for prospective apprentices, and another list of money collected by Longfellow
iii) After 1783, a list of subscriptions not paid in 1791.
Many pages at the end of the book have not been used.
