Description | Arranged by Mr Beaufort, WS/C/2/1-4 contain (alphabetically in each volume) mainly birth and baptismal certificates but also some marriage certificates of parents and, in WS/C/2/5 a few miscellaneous letters, petitions and certificates concerning candidates for the School. Most of the information in WS/C/2/1-5 is included in W M Beaufort, 'Records of the French Protestant School', (London: Huguenot Society of Great Britain and Ireland), vol. IV, pp. 355-466, but not all the miscellaneous papers are mentioned. As Mr Beaufort was concerned with compiling as complete as possible a record of all children who had been at the School, and not particularly with genealogy, he did not print many details about the origin of families, names of grandparents, occupations of fathers, etc. In the 19th century the father's occupation is usually given in the certificate; many are weavers or other textile workers, several are printers and cabinet-makers. Additions and corrections to Beaufort's list can be found in Susan Minet, 'École de charité française de Westminster' in the Proceedings of the Huguenot Society (London: Huguenot Society of Great Britain and Ireland), vol. XII, pp. 91-117; and in Irvine R Gray, 'Huguenot manuscripts: a descriptive catalogue of the remaining manuscripts at the Huguenot Library', Huguenot Society Quarto Series, volumes 56 (London, 1983), pp. 110-115. Occupations have not been included in these lists unless of unusual interest. |
