Description | These records consist of an incomplete set of the minutes, agenda and circulated papers of the London Day Training College Local Committee, 1904-1909; the College Council 1909-1930; and the Transfer Committee, 1930-1931, regarding the transfer of the College to the University of London.
The series comprises: A full set of minutes of the LDTC Local Committee, January 1904 to October 1909. Sporadic records of the College Council from November 1909 until 1919. Unless otherwise stated, the files consist mainly of agendas and circulated papers. From 1919-1930 there is an almost complete set of minutes. Circulated papers of the University of London Transfer Committee.
At a much later date the series was divided into two (1904-1924 and 1924-1931), paginated and indexed, perhaps with a view to the production of a series of bound volumes. The pagination in not always accurate, but the indexes have been retained and an indication of the page numbers to which these refer is given in each file description. None of the minutes are signed originals. |
AdminHistory | From its establishment in 1902 the London Day Training College (LDTC) was governed by a Local Committee appointed by the Technical Education Board (TEB) of the London County Council (LCC).
This was originally composed of representatives from the TEB, the Senate of the University of London and the London School Board.
From 1904, when the LCC took responsibility for all education in London, the LDTC Local Committee reported to the LCC's Higher Education Sub-Committee and was composed of the Chairman of the LCC, the Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the LCC Education Committee, the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor of the University of London and six representatives each from the University and the LCC.
In November 1909 when the LDTC became a School of the University, the composition of its governing body was altered to include the College's Principal and Vice-Principal. At the same date it changed its name from the LDTC Local Committee to the LDTC Council. The LCC retained financial control while the LDTC Council was responsible for all other management issues. In June 1930, with a view to the transfer of management of the College to the University of London, the University Senate appointed a Transfer Committee which reported in July 1931.
A Provisional Delegacy, appointed by Senate, took over management in 1931 (see IE/1/1/4). In 1932 full control of the LDTC was transferred to the University of London, not as a School, but as a central activity of the University, and was re-named the Institute of Education. From this date it was governed by a Delegacy appointed by Senate and an Academic Board (see IE/1/1) composed of Institute staff. |
