AdminHistory | The Senior Common Room was originally opened when the Institute of Education was based at Senate House. It was a place of important hierarchy and admission was restricted to professors, heads of departments and senior administrators. Activities in the Room largely involved smoking, and social events. When the Institute moved to 20 Bedford Way there was no similar accommodation. The Senior Common Room took up residence in a number of smaller rooms which were characteristically occupied by retired or visiting staff who may not have had an office of their own. It increasingly became a haven for members of staff who wished to smoke as a no-smoking policy was introduced in other public rooms and the main place for academic and professional staff to meet moved to the cafeteria (Lawton Room).
Past Presidents of the Senior Common Room were Terry Davis, Kathleen Barker, Richard Aldrich, Professor N Graves, Eric Earle. |
