| Description | Internal staff file of Fred Clarke, Director of the IOE from 1936 until 1945. He was also Advisor to Oversea Students from 1935-1936 and again from 1948 until his death in 1952.
This file contains:
- A substantial amount of correspondence with Percy Nunn during Clarke’s time at McGill University, mainly regarding education in the British Empire and Dominions, and Clarke’s eventual appointment at the IOE. Handwritten and typed.
- Clarke’s completed application form for recognition as a teacher as the University of London, along with CV.
- Later correspondence between Clarke and his successor as IOE Director, G.B. Jeffrey.
- Internal correspondence regarding a period of Clarke’s absence due to mental health problems and stress.
- Correspondence between people at the IOE and members of Fred Clarke’s family, mainly with his widow Edith Clarke, following his death. Also includes one letter each from his daughters Mary and Magda.
- A typescript memo by Clarke entitled ‘Proposed Imperial Institute of Education in London’.
- A typescript document entitled ‘Provisional Bibliography Of The Works Of Sir Fred Clarke; Complied and edited by his daughter Mary Clarke Field.’ (December 1955).
- An internal IOE letter regarding Clarke’s career and his portrait painting (1981).
