AdminHistoryDr. Ian Michael was born in Kelso in 1915. Educated in England he went on to teach at a number of schools and universities in the UK. He was seconded to the University of Khartoum in Sudan, where he was appointed the first Professor of Education. In 1964 he became the first Vice-Chancellor of the University of Malawi appointed by the country's first PresidentDr Hasting Kamuzu Banda. In November 1973, Dr. Michael become the Deputy Director of the Institute of Education; retiring from this post in 1978. Dr. Michael was also the founding member of the Textbook Colloquium (established in 1988), together with Christopher Stray which was established to promote the interdisciplinary study of textbooks, especially from a historical perspective. He died in 2014

Ian Michael also undertook research into the history of the teaching of English. Between 1979 and the 1990s he published 'English: from the Sixteenth Century to 1870' (1987); 'Early Textbooks of English' (1983) and a number of papers based on his research.
