| AdminHistory | The Flaxman Gallery was the creation of Henry Crabb Robinson, diarist and journalist. He persuaded Maria Denman, the sister-in-law and executrix of the artist John Flaxman, to present a collection of his works, totalling about 140 plaster casts and some drawings. The arrangement of the gallery was supervised by a committee and subscriptions were raised. Crabb Robinson himself gave very generously and the fund was also supported by Sir Charles Eastlake, Director of the National Gallery, the banker and philanthropist Samuel Rogers and Prince Albert among others. The Gallery was opened in 1851. |
