DescriptionDeed of gift, parchment with pendant seal attached. Roger de Mortimer (fl. 1153 - d. before 8 July 1214) grants and confirms to the Church of the Blessed Mary in Cwmhir and the Cistercian monastic community (Abbey of Cwmhir) certain lands and liberties in the districts of Maelienydd (Melenid) and Gwrtheyrnion (Wardreignon).
Lands: the charter records the precise boundaries of the property confirmed to the Abbey of Cwmhir, most of which lies in Maelienydd and Gwrtheyrnion. For a detailed explanation see B G Charles' commentary, a copy of which is kept with this item.
Consideration: No monetary consideration. Given in consideration for the salvation of the souls of Roger de Mortimer, his father, his mother, his wife, his sons and daughters, his followers or retainers (hominum) still living, and those of his men who were killed in his conquest of Maelienydd (Melenid).

Dated the 6th day before the Ides of March 1199, in the 2nd year of the coronation of King John, i.e. 10 March 1200.
Seal/signature: with the pendant seal of Roger de Mortimer in red wax, attached with a red leather seal tag. The device on the seal is a knight on a galloping horse, surrounded by the words "SIGIL[LU]M ROGER[I] DE MOR[TU]O MARI".
Endorsements: Annotations in a 13th century and two 17th century hands. The last endorsement relates to William Fowler, whose family aquired the abbey and lands after the dissolution.
