AdminHistoryCharles Bell (1774-1842) was a Scottish surgeon, anatomist, physiologist, neurologist, artist, and philosophical theologian. A pioneer of neurology, he is noted for discovering the difference between sensory nerves and motor nerves in the spinal cord. He is also noted for describing Bell's palsy.

Bell gave the inaugural lecture of UCL, then known as the 'University of London', on 1st October 1828, taking on the mantle of 'Professor of Surgery and Physiology' (1828-1830). He was also instrumental in the creation of Middlesex Hospital Medical School, which merged with UCLH Medical School in 1987.
