AdminHistorySamuel Maynard (1789-1866) was a bookseller of works in mathematics, physics and astronomy. Born 1789 in Taunton, he moved to London at the age of 20 and founded the 'Mathematical Academy' at 16 Clarendon Square, Somers Town. He later opened a small shop for mathematical books in Crown Court, Fleet Court, before moving to premises at 8 Earl's Court, Leicester Square.

He remained in business for 30 years, until 1862, when he retired to the Booksellers' Retreat, Abbots Langley. He died there in 1866, aged 77.

Besides his activites in the trade, he was a competent mathematician and edited several works on arithmetic, including 'A System of Practical Arithmetic' by Rev. J. Joyce and 'The Complete Practical Arithmetician' by Thomas Keith.
