AdminHistoryRev. Thomas Dale (1797-1870) was an Anglican priest. He was appointed first Professor of English Language and Literature at UCL in January 1828 but left soon afterwards. This was partly due to unhappiness at the small number of students taking the subject but also at announcements made by the professors of Latin (Key), Greek (Malden) and mathematics (De Morgan), which forbade English students from taking their subjects. He also disapproved of the university's liberal institutions, particularly its admission of Dissenters, Nonconformists and Jews, and found it secular to the point of being "godless".

Rev. William Harness (1790-1869) was also an Anglican priest and noted as a man of letters. At the time this letter was composed, he was preaching in nearby St Pancras at Regent Square Chapel.
