AdminHistoryJohn Whishaw (1764-1840) was an English lawyer and author. He was a member of the first Council of the University of London (later University College London) from December 1825 and of its first Education Committee in 1827. He was one of the less active supporters of the University, and left the Council in February 1831 without being proposed for re-election.

Thomas Coates (c. 1802-1883) was appointed first Clerk to the University of London in 1828. He had trained as a solicitor with William Tooke, one of the founders of the University, in Tooke's chambers on Bedford Row.

Coates was promoted to Secretary of the University in 1832-1835. Coates also acted as Secretary of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge and remained in that position until the society was wound up in March 1846.
