TitleHarif-Bei-Clown: Literature, love, politics & comedy journal No.1
Date15 June 1920
DescriptionJournal 1 contains:
The cover of this issue of the magazine portrays a mansion surrounded by a garden and facing the sea.
Introduction: The author in this issue tackles the uncertainty of the current economic-political situation and Russian national strategy.
The world is divided into two between the "red tsarist imperialism" and the black Anglo-American imperialism.
The author draws a man with a red Turkish cap giving his back to the readers. The title above him reads" Which face shall he have when he turns around?"
Excerpts from the Poem Harif-Bei: The magazine is divided into different section including a long poem which Hans says might have been censured by the state.
The poem recalls Hans Nicholas's time in Haif Bei. The author briefly describes the scenery and refers to a series of portraits put next to each other each playing its own role.
In the ballroom he observes people who seem distorted from the second floor. In the ball room there is a general and he is talking to the count and explaining what happened to the exiled.
Maybe he will be able to soothe the exiles pain. This poem is signed Alter Ego maybe symbolising the detachment of the author from what happened in the poem as if talking about someone else.
Children Tale: "The Turk" is a story for children about a Turkish boy who always liked to climb higher and higher until his legs couldn't hold him anymore and he was forced to walk.
In the end the narrator warns the children about wanting to climb too high because then their legs can't hold them.
Math and Physics Problems: The following page represent a drawing of a donkey and men riding donkeys with a mountain landscape.
The caption writes: parade of words before Harif-Bei during the holidays.
This drawing ironically refers to the 4 mathematical and physics problems that the reader have to solve written in the next page.
Most of them involve the calculation of various physics events like the orbit of earth in space.
Recipes for Young Wives: The next section deals with recipes for young wives.
The recipe suggest how to cook meat with a mixture of bread, onion, flour, peppers, cucumber and salt. Then leave put on a frying pan at medium fire, do not flare it up and it is ready.
There a few tips for refugees and to give food to them. On the counter put jam, gingerbread men and practically your cheese, bread, rice,
Charades and Rebuses: The last page similarly to the previous numbers is dedicated to rebus games.
The author compiled on the right hand side a series of drawings (eye or a bucket) and on the left hand side a series of written clues.
The very last page contains further information on the publication of the magazines, including the possibility to apply to different versions of the magazines in different languages to the editors such as: English, German and French. The author does not give any specific dates for the next issue of the magazine but specifies that due to the high demand of the readers it will be published soon. The back cover portrays a nocturnal vision of the sea and cliffs lighten by a crescent moon and a star which reflect in the water. A lonely dog is drawn walking on the beach.
