Date1913-1929
DescriptionThree hand-written, foolscap size and leather bound medical casebooks: 1. James L Birley Medical cases seen from August, 1911 to February, 1913. Pages numbered from 1 to 458; 2. 'James L Birley, February 1913. Pages numbered from 462 to 918. The latest date in the book is 13.i.xv on page 918.; 3. 'James L Birley Jan.1915'. Pages numbered from 919 to 1125, this last bears the date 8.ix.xx. Two further pages are unnumbered, and the last of these bears the date 23.4.29 (sic). The three casebooks originate from Dr J L Birley's time working with patients at two hospitals: Queen Square and St Thomas's, between 1911 and 1929.    All of the entries in the books were handwritten by him, and relate to patients, men, women and children, whom he admitted to hospital and referred to senior doctors. The casebooks are illustrated with medical diagrams and a few photographs of the patients. A diagnosis of each patient's illness is given. The names and occupations or addresses of the adult patients are given,  as are all the patients' ages. Although only the last entry for 1929 identifies by name St Thomas's hospital to which the patient, an entertainer, was admitted, inside the second volume there is a small sheet of paper headed 'Queen's Sq', that lists the names of some of the patients whose cases are described in that volume.
