AdminHistory | Johanna Chandler formed a Ladies' Committee in 1860 to collect money for special purposes. The Ladies' Samaritan Society was originally a subcommittee of the Ladies' Committee. Its initial function was to relieve distress among poorer patients by giving donations of money, food and clothing. Later it assisted patients living at some distance from the Hospital to visit its outdoor departments. The Society derived its income from accumulated funds and annual subscriptions. Other fund-raising activities included appeals, dinners and bazaars.
