TitleMRC 1971 review: Site visit papers
Date1971
DescriptionThe papers from a November 1971 visit from a Medical Research Council (MRC) Clinical Research Board Sub-committee, to the MRC Unit for the Study of Environmental Factors in Mental and Physical Illness. These papers include the following documents as ‘Annexes’:

- a timetable for the visit;
- a short paper entitled ‘Note by Dr. J.W.B. Douglas’, director of the Unit;
- a programme of talks to be given by members of the Unit’s scientific staff during the visit;
- a list of the Unit’s publications.

In his ‘Note’, Douglas describes the Unit as having four main research projects in progress:

- The National Survey of Health and Development (NSHD);
- The Second Generation Study (a sub-study of the NSHD);
- ‘The Twin Study of Mother/Child interaction’;
- ‘The Development of Instruments to record the behaviour of mothers and infants in the home’.

As the NSHD's core costs have been funded by the MRC since 1962, the MRC carries out these reviews of the study every 5 years. These became known as ‘quinquennial reviews’ or ‘QQRs’.
