<p>These papers were originally thought to have been read at the Moral Sciences Club, Cambridge. However, the first essay predates the foundation of the Moral Sciences Club in 1874. The papers are more likely to have been read at a philosophical society known as the "Grote Club", an informal group centred around John Grote (1813-1866). Known as the "Grote Society" after Grote's death, it is believed to be the precursor to the Moral Sciences Club.</p> |
