Description | 167 photographs and 23 negatives documenting the construction of Worthing Technical High School, completed in May 1955, designed by the Architects dept, Ministry of Education in collaboration with F R steele Esq, FRIBA, MPTO, and AMI structural engineers, contractors Gilbert Ash Ltd. The photographs and negatives illustrate the construction and the school in use and includes photographs of the architect's model, and an aerial view of the finished building.. Image annotations include services gas main; mural; detail of BH plinth and cladding; gymnasium; views of the school from the playing field; library; detail of staff corridor roof lights and door frame; link corridor from four storey; erection of a 23'4 2 primary; pre stressed concrete construction test of 20'0" by 20'02 bay; junction between end unit and neighbouring components before modification; primary beam end units; primary and secondary beam system; pre stressing compressor; primary and secondary beam system stressed up; erection of primary beams with mobile crane, only mechanical equipment used in construction; rooflights; and housecraft. One photograph is annotated on the reverse with the following names; Mary Crowley, Maurice Lee Michael Ventris[?], Wilfred Ash, Anthony Pitt, David Newle, Alan Harris, and John Price. The file includes photographs of staff rooms; classrooms with children in them; typing/secretarial lessons; a pond/garden; school field; heating units; courtyards; corridors; bike racks; and a snow covered playground with people in them. The file also contains photographs inscribed on the reverse with 'Wokingham' illustrating a library garden, housecraft garden and four storey; and a photograph detailing the construction of Nottingham Arnold High School - some other photographs in the file have 'Arnold' inscribed on the reverse. |
