There were three schools on the RAF Bruggen base from 1975. Bruggen was located at the West German/Dutch border between the German village of Elmpt and the much larger Dutch town of Roermond. During the Cold War Bruggen played an important role in defence of the West. It was the "home" of 4 squadrons of RAF fighter/bomber aircraft; at various stages, Lightenings, Phantoms, Jaguars and Tornados. It was very much an active base regularly carrying out practice exercises for reaction to invasion from the Soviet Union.
From the 1970s through to the 1990s the three schools were Bader First School (4 to 8year olds), Barnes Wallis First School (4 to 8 years olds) and Cheshire Middle School (9 to a3 year olds) all clearly named after famous contributors to the RAF's successes in the Second World War.
