| AdminHistory | Oleg Gordievsky was a KGB officer employed in the Soviet Embassy in London in 1985 when he defected to Britain. His wife and two young daughters were not allowed to join him and Lord Bethell conducted a campaign as a member of the European Parliament's human rights sub-committee to secure permission for them to leave the Soviet Union. He wrote articles on their behalf in the British and Russian press and wrote letters to Mikhail Gorbachev, Margaret Thatcher and Douglas Hurd, among others. |
