Description | Original handwritten diary kept by Captain Thomas Smith (1782-1863), forming part of his ship's log. Dated May-August 1842 when he was trading in the South China Sea, relates to the First Opium War. With an envelope and note from Karl Pearson's cousin Lizzie Cattley forwarding the diary to him, probably in 1907. Also photocopies of 3 pages from the diary. All found in an envelope addressed to R M Butler. |
