Title[Letters from Fred Clarke to Edith, from Montreal]
Date1933-1934
DescriptionFile contains 46 letters sent from Fred in Montreal back to Edith in Oxford between 23 September 1933 and 28 May 1934. The letters begin as Fred sails from the UK back to Montreal in 1933, and end as Fred sails back to the UK in 1934. In these letters he generally discusses family affairs and his work commitments in Canada, which include teaching, giving speeches and lectures, and being chairman of an institute. It's unclear which institute he is chairman of, but throughout the letters he makes reference to the Institute of Foreign Affairs, and the MacKay Institute, so it is likely to be one of these two. He also writes about negotiations over the possibility of transferring to London to take up a position at the Institute of Education, partly because he felt there was little more he could achieve in education in Quebec. File also includes correspondence relating to Anna Clarke's mental health as a teenager.

The envelope dated 27 February 1934 also contained a letter to Fred from 'Miss Versfeld', of the Department of Labour, Pretoria.
The envelope dated 2 May 1934 also contained a newspaper cutting of the article 'McGill Professor Sees Great Perils: Clarke Fears Chaotic Conflicts in Next 50 Years but Suggests Possible Escape.' - an article about Clarke's speech to the British Empire Club in Toronto.

The folder also contains an information booklet for a voyage from Southampton to Quebec aboard the 'Empress of Britain', September 1934.
