Description | The volume starts with Fry writing that A.N., who is the daughter of Lord Halifax's sister, is staying with John Listers. Fry mentions that John Listers was in the USA recently and was surprised at their enthusiasm for, and support of Britain. Throughout the diary Fry narrates the progress of the Second World War.
June 13 Church Farm, Buckland, Aylesbury Anni Noll Wassermann came to discuss post war reconstruction, she had been assigned Health, and Margery helped; Fry gave Bemax to her gosling; discusses Yria and Russia. June 14 Fry fell off her bike. June 15 Fry in bed with bruises; Roland Liem and Ellen Burton visited; Roland mentioned he nearly became a Christian till he saw the Archbishop's Palace at Canterbury. 16 June Fry is reading Ambassador Dod's Journal. June 18 visit from H Winslow who brought a portrait of an Indian; Mrs Milton with syringes; Ellen Burton who is to marry Roland Liem; talks of Hitler's Russia policy. June 19 Dr Lloyd Hart visited, Fry went for X rays; worries about chicken pox; trouble with the Wright's two evacuees means they will be sent back to town; mentions treaty of non aggression between Turkey and Germany. June 20 M has chicken pox, Fry has cracker her femur; visits from Bovings, Ellen Burton, Mrs Nelson. June 23 visits from Mrs Nelson, Gerry, Miss Guest re a girl names Jean Meakin who Fry does not feel she can take in; worries about M who has chicken pox; war news. June 25 Mr Foley from the Wingfield Hospital visited Fry and diagnosed a fracture, Foley is cousin of M Carslake. June 27 trouble with the nurse. June 28 worries regarding Mrs Bohm, but all resolved and she leaves on Monday; Fry writes in French that the nurse has a devil for everyone but her. June 30 Miss Marriot visited. Jul 16 Fry happy to be well again; Jens Boving visited; Fry is grateful to friends. Jul 18 Fry recounts some funny points of her illness. Jul 19 worries about Chervy; update on Russo-German war. Jul 20 'this has been a great day for the v-sign'; discusses various herbal cures for her illness. Jul 21 Mrs Wood visited, she said the Lib[eral] conference was full of people determined to talk about Marxism; SMF returned from Oxford. Jul 22 the Bovings visited; Mrs Mrs Beardor-Grundy visited; Begonia arrived; SMF in town for a reception lunch to Wellington Koo; news re Japan and China; M talks about a discovery regarding cells and organisms Jul 23 Nurse Clarke left; Gerry showed Fry her animal toy making. Jul 24 Mrs McDougall visited, talked about her son in Addis, says it is an 'extraordinary mixture of Italian & pure savagery'. Jul 25 Mrs Nelson offered to milk Fry's cow; Old Mrs Bunning was buried; Mrs Nelson's nephew is back from the Mediterranean. Jul 26 NH and Hurse W went to a 'Red & Sale' at Gerry's, brought back Maria; Begonia is transformed by Maria; Peggy Marks left; Dorothy Thompson on the radio spoke about the British attitude in response to the stress of war. Jul 27 Joan's 89th birthday; Roland Liem and Ellen Burton visited for the day and were very happy. Jul 28 everyone ill 'seedy'; bomb dropped months before was detonated in the woods and shook the house; Miss Marriot visited; N fetched wheelchair for Fry from Aylesbury. Jul 29 M composing a speech to be given to the Penal Reform service . Jul 30 M went to town for 'China Camp & Colonial Cttee', and to see Home Office man, Mr Newsome with regards to releasing some Communist prisoners, also mentions Eleanor Rathbone. Jul 31 FL Lucas and his Swedish] wife visited from Bletchley where he is doing Foriegn Office work, they discussed communism, Hitler, Chamberlain, free will and determinism; finished reading Virginia Woolf's Between the Acts. Aug 1 Norah Laycock visited, she is running the farm school very well; Margery went to Bow Street and them to speak to a Penal Reform Conference at Cambridge. Aug 2 visitors Miss Scott, Mrs Milton, the Bovings visited; Molly Bowden to tea, she had been accepted into the 'WRENS' [Women's Royal Naval Service]; discussed particulars of an operation with Nurse's friend, Miss Ralph. Aug 3 Fry is worried by Begonia's influence on Maria; finished reading 'We were not all wrong' by Mander, and an article by J Strachey. Aug 4 Fry discusses the progress of the war, German losses; Miss Ralph left; Gerry came to borrow the croquet set for use by her holiday children, Mr Abol 'Jewish father of some of her 1st pupils & an idealist pro-Britisher of purist type has just lended back in Scotland after the shameful experience of being shipped to Australia, and is now to be interned in the I[sle] of Man'; Dr Lloyd Hart visited. Aug 5 Edward Ashcroft visited, he thinks the harvest has been affected by the storms, he plans to get 'J.O.B.' into a scheme for 'C.O.s' [conscientious objectors] to become agriculturalists; SMF back from penal reform conference; discussion on progression of war; Prison Commissioners difficulties - many good wardens called up to fight, hundreds of foreigners interned, many prisons bombed. Aug 6 Katie Radcliffe visited, very happy over 'Y.M.' and assured Fry there was 'no feeling of intransigent Pacifism'; Radcliffe talks of her feelings of uncertainty regarding a life after this one, Fry was 'astonished' as she feels this is fundemental; M had Marjorie Rachstraw down for the day. Aug 7 letter from 'J.O.B.',possibly a love letter, Fry found itr difficult to answer; Agnes arrived, has had lots of evacuees staying; SMF went up to see Dalton on a deputation to remonstrate about the vagueness regarding stopping oil supplies to Japan; Miss Holland visited, she might be employed by Fry to do housework. Aug 8 Fry suffered a bad night of pain and no sleep; Joan came for the day; Fry went to hospital to be x-rayed. Aug 10 Margery left for the Isle of Man regarding an inquiry into some of the internees; Anne Turner visited. Aug 11 Jens visited; arranged to send Begonia away; Agnes and N went to Ivinghoe Beacon; acceptace of young man from the 'Camp' taken on oas a servant; ; phonecall form Hilda Harrison and Avice Aug 12 report on fracture from doctor; harvest is bad due to weather; Lloyd Hart told story about Mary Churchill calling Chamberlain 'the mouse of Munich'; Grace Beale visited, she was treated unfairly by officials registering for the WRAFS, promises were broken and she has to go back into service and pay for her father's funeral. Aug 13 Fry received a post card from Mrs Mitcheson telling her that the Ivar Olssons want word of her; Fry describes her household and friends finding out about Churchill and Roosevelt's and the conclusion of this, Fry descibes her faults with the conclusion, but says that she was still "very much moved";
