Containing paintings, drawings and sketches of flowers, butterflies and other natural subjects; still life; figures in historical or national dress; buildings and landscapes (for a full inventory see accessions correspondence file). Most pieces have been pasted into the volume. There are also some quotes copied in a medieval style with illuminated floral borders, these are on parchment. Some are dated, all 1830s, except two drawings by Edward Wheeler Galton dated 1867 at the end of the book.. |
CustodialHistory | Created by Elizabeth Anne Galton and probably given to her niece, Eva Biggs (Lucy Evelyne Ellis, nee Biggs). Eva was her uncle, Francis Galton's, companion until his death in 1911. In 1915 she married Arthur Guy Ellis and the couple lived in Grayshott, taking over the tenancy of a cottage known as the "Priest's Cottage" which was renamed "Guy's House". Arthur Ellis died in 1930; it is not clear how long Eva remained at the cottage before her own death at Ryde in 1954. The book was found at the cottage by a family who took over the tenancy in the early 1950s; it remained with this family before being gifted to UCL in 2014. |
