AdminHistoryBorn near Vilna, grandson of Rabbi Jossel, 1850; emigrated to England in 1882 and settled in Manchester, where he became was one of the stalwarts ofthe Zionist movement; he set up a printing press which produced works by prominent local Zionists as well as his own translations into Hebrew; foundation President of Ivriyah; died 1912. Publications include: 'Ha-Rokel' a novel, translated from the German (1886); 'Shimshon ha-Gibor', a translation of Milton's 'Samson Agonistes' (1895); 'Mi-Kenaf ha-'Arets Zemirot' original poems, and translations from the English (1898, 1908); 'Divre Ahikar', a translation of 'Ahikar the Wise' (1898); 'Yehudah ha-Makabi', a translation of Longfellow's 'Judas Maccabeus' (1900); 'Ha-Makhelah', a collection of Hebrew poets from 1725 to 1903 (1903); 'Omar Kayam', a translation of the Rubariyat of Omar Khayyam (1907); 'Emek ha-Sidim' (1908).
