AdminHistoryBorn London, son of Joseph Mayer Montefiore, stockbroker and President of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, 1860; educated at Wellington and Christ Church, Oxford; Baronet, 1886; married Marianne Gutmann, daughter of Baron Wilhelm von Gutmann of Vienna, an ironmaster, 1888; no children; appointed High Sheriff of Kent, 1894, and of Sussex, 1895; lawyer; Chairman, Chovevei Zion Association; President, Zionist Federation of Great Britain and Ireland, but resigned from the Zionist movement during World War I; President of the Elders of the Spanish and Portuguese Congregation; represented Bevis Marks Synagogue on the Board of Deputies; died 1935. Publications include 'The Princesse de Lamballe' (1896).
