AdminHistoryJames Picciotto, born Aleppo, Syria, son of Moses Haim Picciotto, merchant and communal leader, 1830; the family moved to England in 1843; financier; married Mary Miriam Benoliel, 1886; interested in promoting education, particularly adequate training for the Jewish ministry; Member of Council and Education Committee of Jews' College, 1878-; helped to found the Jewish Historical Society of England, 1893; hymnologist; died 1897. Publications include: translations of a number of works into English from Hebrew, French, and Yiddish; a series of essays on Anglo-Jewish history for the 'Jewish Chronicle' (1872-), published in book form as 'Sketches of Anglo-Jewry' (1875); he also wrote on Jewish and general themes in the 'Jewish World' and 'The Examiner'. Mary Miriam Picciotto, born c1847, daughter of Isaac Benoliel, from a notable Gibraltese family.
