AdminHistoryBorn London, son of Solomon Sebag, a merchant from Mogador, Morocco, and his wife Sarah, sister of Sir Moses Montefiore, 1822; a successful stockbroker; married Adelaide (Ada) Cohen, daughter of Louis Cohen, 1851; closest associate of Sir Moses Montefiore in his last years and heir to his Ramsgate estate; after Sir Moses' death, he added the name of Montefiore to his own by royal license, 1885; Justice of the Peace for Kent and the Cinque Ports; High Sheriff of Kent, 1889; Lieutenant of the City of London; Vice President of Hovevei Zion, 1890s; Vice-President and President (1895-1903) of the Board of Deputies of British Jews; Italian Consul-General in London from 1896; knighted, 1896; President of the Elders of the Sephardi Synagogues of England; Knight Commander of the Crown of Italy; concerned with the welfare of the Jews in Palestine, administering on behalf of the Spanish and Portuguese synagogue the Holy Land Trust bequeathed by Sir Moses Montefiore; died London, 1903.
