AdminHistoryBorn Poznan, 1891, the son of a butcher; educated at Yeshivah in Wolsztyn, 1831-1836; studied under S R Hirsch in Oldenburg, 1836-1840; worked as a private tutor in Ostrow, 1840-1842; accepted to study at Breslau University, 1842; PhD, University of Jena; head teacher of the orthodox school in Breslau; head teacher of the Jewish school of Lundenburg, 1850-1852; moved to Berlin, 1852, and lectured in Jewish history to theological students; appointed lecturer in Jewish history and Bible at the Jewish Theological Seminary of Breslau; appointed honorary professor at the University of Breslau, 1869; editor of the 'Monatsschrift fuer Geschichte und Wissenschaft des Judentums', 1869-1888; elected honorary member of the history department of the Academy of Madrid, 1888; died 1891. Publications include: contributions to the 'Monatsschrift fuer Geschichte und Wissenschaft des Judentums', 'Construction der juedischen Geschichte' (1846); 'Gnostizismus und Judenthum' (1846); 'Geschichte der Juden von den aeltesten Zeiten bis zur Gegenwart' (1853-1870); commentaries on Song of Songs and Ecclesiastes (1871); commentary on Psalms (1882); Volkstuemliche Geschichte der Juden (1887-1889); Historic Parallels in Jewish History (1887).
