AdminHistoryHerbert Martin James Loewe, born London, eldest son of James H Loewe, 1882; educated at St Paul's School and Queens' College, Cambridge; English teacher at Alliance Schools at Cairo and Abbasiah, 1906; Curator of Oriental Manuscripts, Cambridge University Library, 1908-09, 1923-24, 1927; Director of Oriental Studies, St Catharine's College; Lieutenant 11th South Staffs, 1915; married Ethel Victoria Hyamson, 1915; Head of Inspectorate of Munitions Alipore, 1917; University Lecturer in Rabbinic Hebrew, Oxford; Maynard Lecturer in Oriental Languages at Exeter College; Goldsmid Lecturer in Hebrew, University College London; Visiting Lecturer in Rabbinics at Cambridge, 1923 and 1926-31; died 1940. Publications include: 'Catalogue of the Aldis Wright MSS. in Trinity College, Cambridge' (1926), '"Render unto Caesar"' (1940),' Mediaeval Hebrew Minstrelsy' (1926), ' Some Mediaeval Hebrew Poesy' (1927 ) and 'A Rabbinic Anthology' (with C G Montefiore, 1938).
