Description | A large, colourful marriage contract ('Ketubah') found among Moses Gaster's papers.
The first line of Hebrew text on the right side of the Ketubah provides the date of the marriage: 'ברבעי בשבת שישה ימים לחדש טבת משנת חמשת אלפים ושש מאות ושמנה ועשרים לבראית עולם למינין שאנו מונין כאן במתא בוקורישט' 'On Wednesday, six days of the month of Tevet, of the year Five Thousand Six Hundred and Twenty Eight unto the Creation of the World (5628 Anno Mundi = 1 January 1868), according to the count that we use here in the city of Bucharest.'
A note in Romanian on the reverse of the Ketubah appears to say that this item was given to Gaster as a gift in Bucharest on 23 July 1926, by David Eschenasi, nephew of Eliakuis David Algazi. |
