AdminHistory | Portsmouth High School, opened on 21 Feb 1882 with 32 pupils. The new school was based in Marlborough House under the head mistress, Miss Ledger. In 1882 Burlington House was added to the school. The old buildings soon became unusable and land was bought in Southsea to build a purpose built school. The new school at 25 Kent Road, design by J Osbourne Smith, was opened in 1885. The preparatory department opened in 1889, and a kindergarten followed the year after. From 1920-1923 the school leased 43 Kent Road for extra accommodation. In 1923 the school purchased Clarence House at 30 Clarence Parade, which was later sold on in 1929. In 1926 a new block was opened. In 1927 the school acquired Dovercourt (36 Kent Road) as the new home of the preparatory department. Domestic Science Training was introduced in 1929. In 1934 the school purchased 27 Kent Road. During World War II the school was evacuated to two country houses in Hampshire, Hinton Ampner (Junior Pupils) and Adhurst St Mary (Senior Pupils). The school building was requisitioned by the army and damaged in an air raid in 1940. In 1948, 26 Kent Road was added to the school. |
