AdminHistory | St. John's Wood High School opened on 7 March 1876 on Winchester Road in a building owned by the Governing body of Eton. It was the 9th School opened by the Girls' Public Day School Company and initially had 27 pupils under head mistress Rebecca Allen-Olney. The school number soon rose to 300 and the Council purchased a site on Mansfield Terrace and Springfield Road called Mansfield Gardens at Fitzjohn Avenue, in 1881 and drew plans for the purpose built school buildings. The new school was opened by Princess Louise on 9 May 1882 and renamed South Hampstead High School. To cater for the growing number additional buildings were added to the main school building and in 1921 the school bought Waterlow House which adjoined the site. In 1957 the site was too small to extend further and No. 12 Netherhall Gardens was acquired to become the home of the junior school and Waterlow House became the home of the sixth form. In 1969 the school acquired another site next to the school and a new science block was built on the site which opened in 1971. |
