AdminHistory | Croydon High School was the 3rd school opened by the Girl's Public Day School Company on 14 September 1874. It was based at 'The Chestnuts', North End, Croydon, and was headed by Miss Dorinda Neligan who initially supervised 88 pupils. Oakwood House, Sydenham Road, was the school's boarding house run by Annie Neligan, sister of the head mistress. Moved to 36 Wellesley Road, May 1880; new laboratory built, 1883; 'Old Croydonian's Association was set up for former pupils, 1886; Science Demonstration Room was built, 1902-1903; 'St Leonards', 38 Wellesley Road, became the preparatory school, Feb 1904; 'Home-Life Training Course' established, 1904; preparatory school moved to 'The Elms', 40 Wellesley Road, 1918; Junior School moved to 'The Homestead', at 2 Bedford Park, 1919; school moved to purpose built building on Farleigh Road, 1966. In 1914 the administration of the school was completely transferred to a governing body. The school remained the property of the Trust, the governors sought to preserve the general scheme of education. It was the first Trust school to be awarded a maintenance grant from the local council. The administration of the school remained independent from the Trust until the Trust became independent of the government in the 1980s. |
