| AdminHistory | Gateshead High School opened in 19th September 1876 at Prospects Cottage, Hensham, with 28 pupils under head mistress Miss J Paske Rowdon. In May 1880 the school moved to a new site on Windmill Hill. In 1889 an additional preparatory department was opened in Newcastle. Numbers of pupils began to fall and it was believed there were not enough girls in the town to continue to support the school. In 1895 the preparatory department in Newcastle was closed and reopened as Central Newcastle High School. The Gateshead School closed in 1907 and many of its pupils transferred to the Newcastle School. In 1912 the vacant school building was let to Military Authorities and then to the Office of Works. In 1927 the Trust sold the property to the Office of Works for use as a labour exchange. |
