Description	Schools' Census data was gathered by the Ministry of Education (later Department of Education and Science) in the January of each year from all schools who received funding. Form 16 and 16a were used to gather data from direct grant schools up to 1980 until they were reclassified as independent schools by the 1980 Education Act. The head office was sent the forms and distributed them to the schools. The schools then sent a copy to the Ministry and the head office for their records. The forms listed numbers of free, reserved and residuary places taken up in each school and the local education authority which funded the place. Some of the later returns also included returns from the headmistresses sent to the head office recording entries to the school; numbers of pupils in the school's junior school who did not transfer to the senior school; numbers of senior pupils who were asked to leave; number of senior pupils who left the school; name of local HMI; and details of destination of girls who left the senior schools. The forms pre-1970 were sampled by the Trust and only the returns from two schools have been retained for each year. The returns covering 1970-1975 are complete and have been retained as the contain detailed statistics on each of the schools which were used to create the statistics found elsewhere in this series.
Arrangement	Files 1-2 where initially arranged in another series but were moved when other formed were found in a later accession. Therefore the files from a later accession were listed in date order after the files from the earlier accession.
