AdminHistory | Stead was born in 19 Feb 1873 the son of Samuel Stead, former archdeacon of Bombay. He was educated at Clifton College and King's College, Cambridge. He left Cambridge to become assistant master at Aldenham School in 1898. In 1901 he became an assistant master at Clifton College, where he was later appointed head of the Chemistry Department. In 1908 he was appointed as a HM Inspector of Schools, an office he occupied until he retire in 1933. He was first based in Essex, Surrey and Kent. At the beginning of World War I he was in charge of Hampshire then transferred to the Ministry of Munitions. During 1916-1918 he was a secretary to the Prime Minister's Committee on the Teaching of Science. After the War he became divisional inspector of education and in 1926 was appointed chief inspector and took charge of the secondary branch, becoming responsible for grammar schools. He was made a CBE in 1931. He died on the 23 December 1954.
