| Description | Materials documenting the preparation for using microelectronics for special education and the subsequent setting up of the MEP's Special Education Microelectronics Education Resource Centres (SEMERCs). The continuation of this work beyond MEP's lifetime is documented in GG/4/8.
Folder 1: Contains HMI early notes of visits to special schools and treatment centres, sometimes in the company of inventors, technologists and special needs consultants where microelectronic devices are used to support pupils. Includes aides memoir, correspondence, reports, newspaper cuttings, course materials, articles and notes of visits.
Folder 2: Contains early notes across DES branches, HMI, CET, the Schools Council and university researchers regarding microelectronic aids for disabled and other special needs pupils, as well as consultation meetings with interested bodies and the formation of a consultative group to consider what microelectronics has to contribute to the education of pupils with special needs. There are also notes on the respective roles of DES, CET and other organisations in furthering work in this field. Folder 3: Contains later notes between officials on how the MEP adopts the initiative, develops a policy and sets up the SEMERCs and software development. Also, there are some notes of visit by specialist HMI to special schools and a SEMERC, as part of the evaluation of MEP's work in its context.
