| Description | Communications regarding two government initiatives: the In-Service Training Grant Scheme (TGS) for computing and microelectronics, offered to trainers for the first time in 1986, and the 5-year Educational Support Grant (ESG) Scheme for IT offered for the first time to LEAs in 1988/89 to fund advisory teachers and capital expenditure in IT.
Folder 1: Materials regarding a consultation/invitation conferece, organised by HMI Pip Leaton, to discuss how the In-service Training Grant Scheme (TGS) might be used for teachers of IT and computing. Also includes a discussion paper on what the purpose and focus of the training should be and subsequent written guidance to all training providers on how to apply to run a training course in 1986-7 for serving IT and computing teachers. There is also HMI correspondence and an evaluation in draft form (with drafting comment before its release) of 20 such TGS-funded courses observed.

Folder 3: Materials documenting the process of evaluating LEAs' bids for their Educational Support Grant allocation. Includes aides memoir, a report and assessment forms.
Folder 4: Communications related to the training of IT advisory teachers (ATs) recruited by LEAs using ESG funding, including sample training course programmes from MESU and other trainers, minutes from DES/MESU officials, and the Advisory Group on this training, notes of visit to courses, and DES and NCET evaluation of later courses. |
