Description | Extracts from George Greenough's journals and letters, from his time in Gottingen, Germany. These appear to be Greenough's transcriptions done in later life, copied from earlier documents. These journal entries and letters cover: - studying law in Gottingen; - going on a walking party in the surrounding countryside and villages around Gottingen; - a journey on horseback to the West of England with his Aunt and Uncle, 'Mr and Mrs Smedley'; - notes from Cambridge; - meeting friends in London; - key votes from Greenough's time as an MP.
One of the pages in this file has notes on the reverse, from a meeting with Napoleon Bonaparte on 14 July 1802, but this is a recent transcript done at some point after Greenough's death, not the original notes. It is also not clear whether this was Greenough meeting Napoleon, or someone else. |
